Sarah Fisher, TLMFT
Hi there! How are you doing? I mean, truly: how are you doing? I want to hear about your interests, your relationships, your health, your worries, your joys, and your sorrows. I want to hold space for all the things you really want to say when you reply, “I’m fine, how are you?” Whether you seek therapy for a specific problem or you just want a pocket of time to untangle some thoughts/feelings/experiences, you are welcome here.
Some specific problems I treat include living with chronic illness and pain, trauma, anxiety, depression, self esteem and identity, life transitions, and relationship issues (whether they be intimate, familial, platonic, or professional). Using an integrative therapeutic approach of emotional, cognitive, and body-based elements, my goal is to help you dig deep to find what is already within you to develop the positive change you're looking for.
THE THERAPY EDIT
Therapy as a career is a "new chapter" in my life. Previously, I was a news and features writer, and the (amended) saying is true: you can take the girl out of storytelling, but you can't take the storytelling out of the girl. It naturally helps shape my work as a therapist. As we walk through life, we accumulate stories: about ourselves, others, how to trust and love and relate. Some stories provide a solid foundation for healthy relationships with others and ourselves, and help us move through this world with confidence. Unfortunately, some stories hold us back from satisfying relationships and/or reaching our true potential.
My ideal client is ready to begin exploring the life chapters that could use a re-write. I look forward to helping you edit your stories and empowering you to be the hero of your tale: a hero who is self-determined, confident, and secure in relationship with others.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Starting therapy for the first time, or starting over with a new therapist, can be a little nerve-wracking! I know, I've been there (and strongly believe that all therapists should, ideally, have some experience of what it is like to be in therapy as a client). I practice an integrated, evidence-based approach to treatment informed by attachment theory, modeled through safe presence.
One of my top priorities for you is that you grow to feel safe and comfortable with me. That happens at different speeds for everyone but it begins by creating an atmosphere of collaboration: I may have the therapy training, but you are the one living your experience - so we collaborate to set a pace that feels right for you.
I draw from a number of different theories and therapy models with my clients, and after a couple of sessions learning about you I begin tailoring my approaches to what I believe will work best for you. My go-to approaches include attachment theory (in essence, how we relate to others), narrative therapy, the Gottman method and emotionally-focused therapy for couples work, cognitive behavioral therapy, parts work (IFS), mindfulness, meditative practices, other somatic (body-based) methods, and Brainspotting - a powerful, brain-based trauma therapy.
My full session fee for individuals over 18 and couples is $125 for 50 minutes; I keep a number of reduced fee ($65) spots for clients committed to the process but unable to pay the full rate. Sessions typically take place weekly or every two weeks. I do not accept insurance but I can take payment from an HSA card and/or will provide you with a Superbill if your insurance offers out-of-network reimbursement; I'm happy to explain my reasons for not taking insurance so please feel free to ask if you have any questions or concerns.
LET'S TALK
Research shows that the client-therapist relationship is the biggest factor in therapeutic outcomes. To that end, I offer a 15-minute, free phone consultation for you to ask me any questions and to gauge how comfortable you feel talking to me before we schedule a first session. Whether you know what you need or are still figuring it out, let's talk!
GET TO KNOW ME
Once upon a time, I was a writer for magazines and websites, first in London and later in California. I loved writing, and still do (aspiring novelist over here!), but I learned over time that my favorite part of that career was sitting down with someone whose story I was tasked with writing. What a privilege it was to spend that time with another person learning about their life.
After I moved to Nashville, I joined the Marriage and Family Therapy program at Lipscomb University and felt, almost immediately, that I had found my calling. It is nothing short of an honor to spend sacred time with another person, learning about their life, and applying my knowledge and training to helping that person feel seen, understood, and encouraged.
- I received my M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Lipscomb University in 2020.
- My clinical experience includes Trauma Therapy of Nashville on Music Row, the Lipscomb Family Therapy Center, and Tennessee Prison Outreach Ministry.
- I am working towards my full license under supervision from Randy Halstead, LMFT (#1226).
- Sarah Fisher Therapy, Nashville, opened in January 2023.
- I am a dual British-American citizen, raised in the south of England. The accent comes and goes after many years Stateside!
- Hobbies include writing, reading, painting, cheering on my favorite soccer teams, and tracking down imported British snacks.
